You will need: All-purpose flour, baking powder, granulated sugar, salt, buttermilk, eggs, and sour cream (sour cream helps to keep the bread moist/soft longer). Step-by-Step to Make the Shortbread

Step 1

Gather the ingredients. This ensures that the ingredients are available to use in the recipe.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9-inch X 2 1/2-in round baking pan,

Add the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt to a large mixing bowl. Whisk to combine.

Mix in the softened butter using a pastry blender or clean hand. Do not overmix. Tiny bits of butter will be visible. Make a hole in the middle of the flour mixture.

    1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease one 9-in x 2 ½-in round baking pan.
  2. Step

    2. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt and sugar in a large mixer bowl.

    3. Add the softened butter to dry ingredients using a pastry blender or with clean hand. Do not overwork the butter, little lumps of butter should remain in the mixture. This will keep the bread soft during and after the baking process.

    5. Make a well in center of dry ingredients, add the egg/buttermilk and sour cream to the dry ingredients. Mix lightly with a spatula until the dry and wet ingredients are fully combined with no dry ingredients remaining. Do not beat or over mix.

    6. Pour batter into prepared baking pan. Bake on lower rack 30-35 minutes. Move the pan to the top rack, bake 25-30 minutes or until golden brown on top.

    7. Remove the shortbread from the oven. Allow to rest for 10 minutes. Slice and serve plain or with butter and jam. Serves up to 8 persons.
